Man United fans hope derby winner doesn’t keep Smalling at Old Trafford
Chris Smalling experienced both the agony and the ecstasy of the Manchester derby on Saturday evening as Manchester United produced a comeback for the ages to prevent Manchester City clinching the Premier League title there and then.
The England international – valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt – was bullied by Vincent Kompany for the hosts’ opening goal, which looked to have set City on course for a historic victory, and it was almost a carbon copy of the goal that swung the 2011/12 title race in their direction.
But it was also the former Fulham man who capped United’s second half redemption with a volleyed winner with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Despite clinching the winning goal – his third in the Manchester derby – Smalling has not totally won over the United fans, and they still want him to leave Old Trafford in the summer.
We’ve taken a closer look at the reaction of the Reds fans, who clearly don’t believe one good half of football is enough to redeem Smalling’s career at the club…
